To the editor:
Occasionally, J.A. Bolton has some cute and funny stories about the “old days” or whatever. I like to laugh and enjoy things that happened in the past or the present also.
But a few weeks ago, in one of his stories, he mentioned an incident where his family discovered that their firewood was being stolen. I have no way of knowing if this was a real incident or simply something he told to make up a funny story. If the incident never happened, please accept my apology.
Mr. Bolton said, if my memory is correct, his father put some sort of explosives in a piece of his firewood. I guess Mr. Bolton’s father thought this would be a good way to find out who was stealing his wood, when whoever took more wood, and put it in whatever they were using, their piece of wood would explode.
He goes on to say that some time later, Mr. Bolton’s family heard a loud explosion and saw smoke coming from their neighbor’s house as they were running outside.
While this sounds cute and funny on the surface, if this did in fact take place, there is nothing funny about it.
Someone could have been hurt or even killed. These neighbors of Mr. Bolton could have had their home destroyed by fire. If someone would do something like that to their neighbors, God only knows what they would do to someone else.
This incident was not handled in the right way. If someone were to do something like that today, they would open up themselves to criminal charges and possibly prison time.
If Mr. Bolton’s neighbors were having such a hard time that they had to resort to stealing wood, then they should have gone over and asked for help. The Christian thing to do would have been for Mr. Bolton to have put a sign on his wood pile asking that neighbors not steal the wood, but to ask him for help if needed.
The way Mr. Bolton handled this incident, someone could have been seriously hurt or even killed. Someone might have been blinded for life. There might have been small children or babies in that house. The family could have had their home destroyed by fire. And all this, for a little firewood.
With neighbors like that, you wouldn’t need any enemies. There is nothing cute or funny about hurting others. If this is a true account, shame on anyone who would do anything like that.
