LAURINBURG — A Laurinburg man died Friday morning from injuries he suffered when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle Thursday night, according to the Laurinburg Police Department.
Christopher Michael Benbow, 38, of 1422 West Blvd. Apt. D, was pronounced dead at UNC Hospitals early this morning, according to Police Chief Darwin Williams.
According to Williams, Benbow was heading north on Turnpike Road, between West Boulevard and Blues Farm Road, at about 10:30 p.m. when he was struck from behind by a black Dodge Charger driven by 21-year-old Mark Pracht, of Woodburn Road. He was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital by ambulance, and later airlifted to the Chapel Hill medical center.
“Our victim was wearing dark clothing and had very little reflectors on the bike,” Williams said. “It’s an unfortunate incident — those riding bikes, please be aware of your surroundings. You need reflectors on your bikes and wear light clothing out at night while you’re riding.”
No charges have been brought against Pracht.
The investigation is continuing. Williams said it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were involved.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Benbow was a student at American InterContinental University, an online school, and was planning to graduate in 2016.
