Stick with God’s plan for a successful year
George Ellis The Pastor’s Corner
As I conclude this devotional on “Now that we are here; what are we going to do?” I believe that all of us want success in this year of 2014. But the thing we need to realize is that we all may be looking for it in our own way and not necessarily the right way.
Solomon said in Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seem right unto a man; but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Perhaps the mistake we have made in the past years is that we have tried to be successful our own way and not God’s way, but it didn’t work — and it won’t work! I tell you what: if we do what God told Joshua, in this passage, then God promises that we will have success in 2014.
I say to us as a community in 2014 that if we stick with the master’s plan we will have success — but we can’t vary, we can’t get off course, and we can’t fall back.
Listen to what God told Joshua; first he tells him in Joshua 1:3 “Every place the sole of your foot shall tread or walk upon I have given you.” I claim that this year. Anybody claiming anything this year? And then he tells him how much he had given him: “from the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the great sea” (verse 4); and then God tells him “no man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so will I be with you (verse 5).” In other words Joshua would have God’s presence with him wherever he goes.
You see, those that go where God sends them, and do the right thing, shall have him with them and they shall have success; for he did say “I will not fail thee or forsake thee.” God said to this man “Be strong and of a good courage” — and that’s what I tell somebody in this new year, “Be strong and of a good courage; you’ve got to go through to get to. Before you get to the mountain, you must first go through the valley.”
This is your year if you stay with the plan. God told Joshua “But make sure that you observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you; don’t turn from it to the right hand or the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.” God said in verse 8, “this book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night.”
Church, now that we are here, what are we going to do? Well, first of all we must stay with the book, and then we’ve got to claim God’s promise, encourage ourselves and speak to ourselves — saying “self, this is your year.”
