LAURINBURG — Moe’s Chicken opened on Friday, but don’t take the name at face value.

The small South Main Street establishment offers far more than chicken on the menu.

“The signature dish is that Moe’s chicken, that taste with that blue Kool-Aid,” said co-owner Jerry Fairley who opened the restaurant with his wife, Shirley. “And that bologna and cheese.”

Moe’s Chicken, located across the street from Scotland Motors, opened last week with a ribbon cutting sponsored by the Laurinburg/Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce.

The newly opened business offers blue, red and grape Kool-Aid to go along with chicken buckets, hot wings, sandwiches, shrimp, liver, gizzard, fish, ribs and even a variety of desserts such as cakes, pies, banana pudding and cupcakes. Side orders consist of hush puppies, fried okra, cole slaw and much more.

The business offers walk-in, pick-up and drive through services. There are booths available inside to dine in.

“You can order right there, but the best thing to do is to call in because the food is cooked fresh and you can get while it’s hot,” said John Pegues, Shirley’s father, who helps grill the chicken and ribs outside the restaurant.

Hours of operation are:

Sunday – 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Monday through Wednesday – 11 a.m. to 12 a.m.

Thursday – 11 a.m. to 12 a.m.

Friday – 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Saturday – 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.

The restaurant currently employs 12 people.

“Moe’s Chicken was in Laurinburg years ago, but it shut down because they just weren’t getting the business that they thought they were going to get at that time,” Pegues said.

It was originally opened in Atlantic City by Charles and Pauly Oliver, Shirley’s aunt and uncle.

“It was formed in Atlantic City in a small place then they decided to move it down south because family was here,” Jerry said. “We decided to take it over and we’re going to try to expand it and step it up, up and up into a new model.”

Jerry is a Laurinburg native. The couple moved back three years ago and opened a Moe’s in Bennettsville, South Carolina. It took a year and a half to open the Laurinburg restaurant.

“There’s just two, but my goal is to have five restaurants,” he said.
