Arrests


LAURINBURG — Akeem Hayes, 24, of 14460 Austin Circle in Gibson, was arrested Wednesday at a traffic stop on North Main Street and charged with felonious possession of a firearm by a felon, altering or removing gun serial numbers and misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon, according to a police report. Lequan Graham, passenger in the vehicle, was charged by citation for simple possession of marijuana and released.


No further information has been provided for Graham at this time. Hayes was placed in jail and held without a bond for committing a felony while on probation. The two were pulled over by officers around 2:25 a.m. when officers saw that Hayes was driving left of center and upon approaching the vehicle officers smelled alcohol and marijuana coming from inside. They searched the vehicle and found a .25-caliber handgun in the center console, along with a small amount of marijuana in a bag hidden under the passenger seat.


Neglected child


LAURINBURG — It was reported Tuesday, around 2:50 p.m., that a resident of Greenfield Apartments, at Turnpike Road, heard a noise outside and found a little girl, almost 2 years old, wandering around outside their door, according to a police report.


The resident was unable to find her parents or guardians after searching the area and police were called. Officers were in route to the police station with the child when her mother contacted the department claiming that the child left home while she was asleep. The mother was not charged. Assistant Police Chief Cliff Sessoms said that the case is under investigation for child neglect.


Thefts


LAURINBURG — It was reported Tuesday that someone stole about 50 feet of copper from an air conditioning unit at Westminister Presbyterian Church, at McGirts Bridge Road, according to a police report.


LAURINBURG — It was reported Tuesday that someone stole an air conditioning unit, valued at about $2,000, from Allstate Glass, at Atkinson Street, according to a police report.


Break-ins


LAURINBURG — Irby Blackwell Sr., of Aurora Street, reported Tuesday that someone broke into his home and stole medication from his home valued at about $60, according to a police report.


LAURINBURG — Isaac West, of Sigma Street, reported on Tuesday that someone broke into his home and stole stereo equipment and a television, valued at about $650, according to a police report.


LAURINBURG — Samuel Teal, of Richmond Street, reported Tuesday that someone broke into his home and stole a television, valued at about $350, according to a police report.


Vandalism


LAURINBURG — It was reported Tuesday, around 7:15 a.m., that two vehicles — a Chevrolet truck belonging to Phillip McNeill, of Shaw Street, and a Chevrolet El Camino belonging to James McNeill, of West Boulevard — were shot at, causing about $200 damage to each vehicle, according to a police report.


Both were parked in the back yard of Phillip McNeill’s. He said that he heard gunshots fired the night before but didn’t check on the vehicles until the next day. His truck was struck in its left side and the El Camino was struck in it’s right rear. The case is still under investigation.
