CHARLOTTE (AP) — Protesters are asking the Charlotte City Council to protect undocumented immigrants who face the possibility of deportation because of a push by the Trump administration.
Media outlets report that about 200 protesters shouted down the council when it met Monday night. Council members left the dais briefly, then returned. They shouted to be heard as they voted on various issues.
After adjourning their meeting, council members met with the protesters.
Protesters asked Mayor Jennifer Roberts to “stand up” to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s office, which runs the 287(g) program in which local police collaborate with immigration agencies. Roberts was booed when she said she would “have conversations” with the sheriff’s office.
Roberts told them that the state has threatened to take millions of dollars of funding from the city if it opposes programs like 287(g).
