Man charged with shooting teenagers during shoe exchange

LAURINBURG — Police have accused a 21-year-old Lumberton man of shooting two teenagers after a shoe exchange in a Laurinburg field went wrong.

Brian Anthony Everette, of 431 Josephine Drive, was arrested Thursday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in the January shooting of a 14- and 15-year old, according to a statement from the Laurinburg Police Department. He was placed in the Scotland County jail under a $100,000 bond.

According to the statement, the three met behind the Northside Square Shopping Center on January 25, a Sunday, where one of the victims agreed to exchange a pair of his shoes and $20 cash for a pair of Everette’s shoes. The victim soon decided he had made a trade for “fake” shoes and wanted his own back, according to the statement, but Everette kept his $20 — so before they traded back, he removed Everette’s “shoe locks,” which are used to hold the laces in place.

When Everette realized the shoe locks were missing, the statement said, he returned to the shopping center, saw the two teenagers running through the field and opened fire, striking one in the arm and the other in both legs.

Both were treated and released from Scotland Memorial Hospital.
