Laurinburg Wendy’s not targeted in credit card breach

LAURINBURG — While a total of 16 Wendy’s locations in North Carolina have been identified as potentially affected by a large-scale data breach, the local restaurant is not one of them.

The Wendy’s at 1650 S. Main St., Laurinburg was not listed as one of the restaurants affected, but those who hit the drive-thru in other cities should be cautious.

Wendy’s chain released a list of 1,025 locations throughout the U.S. on Thursday that were compromised by thieves who stole customers’ debit and credit card numbers. Franchises in Lumberton, Hope Mills and Fayetteville were among those targeted.

The problem started last fall, the company said in a statement, when it was confirmed that criminals had used Malware to hack into the restaurants systems. The Malware targeted card holder’s names, credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates, card verification value and service codes.

The company’s statement does on to say they have “worked aggressively with third-party forensic experts and federal law enforcement on this investigation, which is ongoing.”

Wendy’s is offering fraud consultation and identity restoration services to all customers whose credit or debit cards could potentially be affected.

On the Wendy’s website there is a link, listed below, that allows customers to select their state and view a list of all the affected cities and locations — https://payment.wendys.com/paymentcardcheck.html

Wendy’s is encouraging customers to be mindful of unauthorized charges on their cards and to quickly report suspicious activity to their bank or credit card company.

Those customers whose credit or debit cards have been affected by the breach are encouraged to call a toll-free number 866-779-0485 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
