LAURINBURG — Arts enthusiasts say Scotland County is full of talent and much of it will be showcased next month during a production to raise funds to revive community theater in Laurinburg.
“It has always been my thinking that no matter what small town that you go to, you’ll find people that are just as talented, if not more so, as people who are making a living doing it,” said Brenda Gilbert of the Arts Council of Scotland County. “They’ve just chosen a different path for their lives but they still have that talent.”
Gilbert said the Arts Council of Scotland County is helping reboot Encore! Theatre Inc. through its Community Talent Showcase featuring an array of local talent. Gilbert, who helped establish the community theater in the late 1980s, said the showcase will be held in August to help fund the reestablishment of the theatre.
The theater group had lost momentum in recent years but now work is under way to bring it back with the help of the arts council, Gilbert said. After the August show, they want to stage the Christmas classic, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” and then a spring musical in 2017.
The August show will feature vocalists, cloggers and tap dancers, drama, and a Taekwondo demonstration, Gilbert said. Songs vary from Gospel to musical comedy, and instrumentals.
“All of these people we didn’t know about are out there and have this talent,” Gilbert said. “We knew that a lot of people had moved away from Scotland County. These were people who had been really behind Encore! and working with it, directing and acting; a lot of them were gone. We knew there were a lot of people coming in who we didn’t know who they were. We had hoped there were people out there who were interested and wanted to see it get started again. We just jumped off that cliff in faith and there they are.”
The first performance will be held on Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Storytelling and Arts Center of the Southeast, 231 S. Main in Laurinburg. It will be presented as a cabaret with attendees seated at tables. Tickets are $25 per person which will include hors d’oeuvres and beverages. Tables for eight are also available.
The second performance of the Community Talent Showcase will be held on Aug. 6 at 7 p.m., also at the Storytelling Center. It will be performed with auditorium seating. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for students.
