Funeral services set for slain teen

Services have been set and a fund established for the family of Scotland High School senior Kendrick McGirt, 17, who was killed at his home on Monday.


LAURINBURG — While officers with the Scotland County Sheriff’s office continue to investigate the death of 17-year-old Kendrick McGirt, his funeral arrangements have been finalized.

The family will hold a visitation for friends and family from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday in the Scotland High School gym. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. Burial will held in the Clark Family Cemetery. Richard Boles Funeral Services will handle the service.

A candlelight vigil and balloon release will be held at McGirt’s home at 6841 Hasty Road at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. His family asks those who plan to attend to wear a white T-shirt and bring a candle.

A GoFundMe page has also been set up for the family.

“Instead of a cap and gown Kendrick earned and will wear his angel wings,” the page says. It was created by Nicole Moore after several requests to donate money to the family.

“God laid it on my heart to do this because Kendrick’s mother Ms. Tabitha Lynn McGirt was my high school classmate, SHS class of 1996 and Kendrick was a student at the school where I work,” she said.

McGirt died on Monday at his home. His death has been ruled a homicide, although law enforcement has still not released a cause of death.

Captain Mitch Johnson said McGirt called 911 at 11:58 p.m. on Monday saying he needed help. When EMS arrived at his home on Hasty Road they were not able to revive him.

Born July 30, 1996, he was the son of Tabitha McGirt and Ricky Milligan. He is also survived by his grandparents Sadie Clark McGirt and James Allen McGirt, Jr.He was a senior at Scotland High School and would have graduated next month. He was planning to attend Richmond Community College.

In a post on Facebook his mother said, “I am not supposed to lay my baby to rest. He was a happy carefree young handsome sweetest little shorty you could ever meet and everybody that got that chance to know him they loved him.”

He liked music, playing basketball and being with his family and friends.
