LAURINBURG — Most city and town offices in Scotland County will be closed Thursday and Friday for Christmas.
Scotland County municipal offices are closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in observance of the holiday.
Most state government agencies also closed Wednesday for a three-day holiday. In addition, Laurinburg city offices will be closed today and Friday.
Commercial and residential garbage in Laurinburg was picked up Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The normal trash schedule will resume on Monday.
“We expect to get everybody taken care,” said Charles D. Nichols III, Laurinburg city manager. “Obviously our public safety department will be working through the holidays.
“We just want to remind everybody to please be safe and have happy holidays.”
Most local banks will close at 2 p.m. today. The State Employees Credit Union is closed today and Friday.
Scotland County public schools began the holiday break last week and classes will resume on Jan. 4. Scotland Early College High School or SEarCH will return Jan. 6. The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is closed from Wednesday through Friday. Richmond Community College began its Christmas break on Tuesday. It runs until Jan.1.
Many area retail and grocery stores will be open Christmas Eve, but plan to close early. For example, Roses Express, Belk and Food Lion will all close at 6 p.m on Christmas Eve. Harris Teeter will close at 7 p.m. and Walmart will close at 8 p.m.
Harley Norris of Harley’s Tuxedo and Gifts, said he expects a bevy of last-minute shoppers Christmas Eve. His store will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“That’s one of our busiest days out of the year because all the husbands start coming out Christmas Eve,” he said with a laugh. “Merry Christmas and we’re grateful to all the locals and people who support us every year.”
The ABC store in Laurinburg will early close at today at 6 p.m.
