LAURINBURG — The Laurinburg-Scotland County Chamber of Commerce board of directors has named a county native as the organization’s next executive director.

The board’s search committee recommended Christopher M. English to the full board of directors on Tuesday, which was followed by a unanimous vote of approval.

“The chamber is grateful for the numerous expressions of interest it received in response to the position posting,” said chairman Lee Howell. “The selection of Mr. English was based on his professional background and his interview. Mr. English is passionate about Scotland County and its future, and can make an impact immediately in this position.”

English will begin work on Jan. 2016, succeeding Janet Smith. Smith, who has held the position since May. She announced her resignation last month, citing time constraints and family commitments.

A graduate of Scotland High School and currently a resident of Gibson, English has worked at Marley Engineered Products in Bennettsville, South Carolina for 21 years, most recently as a marketing support manager.

“The board believes that he has the work experience, knowledge and perspective necessary to continue the chamber’s role in service and support for this area and as the voice of business,” said Howell.

The executive director is responsible for managing the programs and events of the Laurinburg-Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce and developing relationships with stakeholders, citizens, elected officials, and volunteers in the region.
