Woman killed in single-car accident

LAURINBURG — A Laurinburg woman was killed Wednesday afternoon in a single-car accident that injured the vehicle’s driver and another passenger.

According to Sgt. Scott Richardson of the N.C. Highway Patrol, a Ford Explorer driven by Juana Duran, 70, of Laurinburg was travelling east on U.S. 74 when Duran ran off the road to the right, lost control, and overturned.

As the vehicle overturned, 36-year-old Jenny Cortez, Duran’s daughter, was ejected from the vehicle’s backseat and died on the scene. Cortes was not wearing a seatbelt, Richardson said.

According to the accident report, the vehicle overturned twice after a series of overcorrections in both directions, finally coming to rest on the right shoulder of the highway’s eastbound lanes.

According to a spokesperson from Scotland Memorial Hospital, Duran was airlifted from the accident to an undisclosed hospital. Miguel Sanchez, who was in the front passenger seat of the SUV, was taken by ambulance to Scotland Memorial Hospital where a helicopter was waiting, the spokesperson said. No information was available on their status as of Thursday afternoon.

The vehicle’s fourth occupant, 14-year-old Adolfo Turante, was uninjured.
