LAURINBURG — Scotland County is on the look out for the most charming child.
Scotland County’s 5th Annual Most Charming Child contest is currently accepting applicants. Participants will be featured in The Laurinburg Exchange and the first place winner will receive a $200 cash prize. To be eligible for the contest, children must be a resident of Scotland County and cannot be older than 5-years-old by Nov. 20.
The contest is sponsored by the Scotland County Partnership for Children and Families, a nonprofit agency that prepares children for success by providing resources to families and the community.
“There were nine participants last year and we would love to have more this year,” said Benny Cox director of the partnership.
Registration for the contest began Sept. 28 and will go through Friday. Registration forms can be picked up from the partnership office. Forms will not be accepted if post marked later than Oct. 9.
Voting for the contest will begin Oct. 13 and go through Nov. 20.
Contest entrants will have their picture printed in The Laurinburg Exchange so that the community can see all of the children. Then there will be voting booths at various community businesses during the voting period.
The public can submit an unlimited number of votes for their favorite child for 50 cents per vote.
To register, parents will need to submit a photograph of their child or children to the partnership office. There is a $15 registration fee for each photo submitted. Only one child should be featured in each photograph and ultra sound photographs will not be accepted.
If the photograph was taken by a professional photographer, a release form must be provided by the photographer giving authorization to reprint the photo.
The contest winner will receive a $200 cash prize, second place will receive a $75 cash prize and third place will receive a $50 cash prize.
The top 12 children who receive the most votes will be displayed in a full color 2016 calendar. The child that receives the most votes will be featured on the cover of the calendar.
All 12 finalists will receive a trophy and are invited to ride on the partnership float during the Christmas parade. They will also receive two calendars to give away to friends and family.
“The funds are used to support the partnership and its program,” Cox said. “We fund subsidy programs, help childcare facilities and we have a professional development program that helps childcare providers attend school.”
Cox said typically parents are more excited by the contest than the children.
“The contest gives parents the opportunity to not only raise funds for their child, but to learn more about what we do at the partnership,” he said. “I just hope that we have quite a few kids participate this year and I look forward to having a great contest.”
