LAURINBURG — A detention officer at the Scotland Correctional Institution has been charged with providing tobacco to an inmate.

Erik Templin, 24, of Raeford was charged on Saturday and released the same day after posting a $2,000 bond.

Scotland Correctional Institution, on McGirt’s Bridge Road near the Laurinburg-Maxton Airbase, houses more than 1,600 inmates in minimum security, medium security, and close custody units.

Scotland Correctional does not permit inmates to obtain cigarettes or tobacco by any means, and all forms of tobacco are forbidden on the premises.

On Monday, the captain on duty declined to comment on Templin’s current employment status and history with Scotland Correctional.
