LAURINBURG — They say liars never win, some people must not have gotten the message.

“Liars” or otherwise known as tall-tale storytellers, will be coming to Scotland County to compete against each other at the Storytelling Arts Center of the Southeast for the “Bold Face Liars’ Showdown.”

This year’s Bold-Faced Liars’ Showdown will take place on April 29 as part of the downtown Springfest. The competition will begin at 2 p.m. in the Storytelling Arts Center on Main Street.

Award winning liars from Kentucky, Georgia, Virgina, West Virginia, and North Carolina will try their best to lie their way to victory and take the title of Champion Bold-Faced Liar of the Southeast.

Veteran competitors, including last year’s winner, J.A. Bolton of Rockingham, will compete with several newcomers, including the 2013 winner of the Virginia Liars Contest, Judith Onesty. Newcomer Lucille Capps, at age 90, is sure to be the oldest liar on the stage.

Contestants have up to seven minutes to spin their tall tales to a panel of three judges, with point deductions for going over the time limit.

The audience will join the act, with an opportunity to vote for their favorite – the people’s choice. The first-place winner and the People’s Choice winner will be invited to tell their tall tales at the Storytelling Festival of Carolina in October.

Serving as emcee for the event will be Martha Johnson, a storyteller from Florence. She has been a featured storyteller at festivals up and down the east coast, including the Storytelling Festival of Carolina here in Scotland County. She’ll entertain the audience while the judges confer and choose the winners.

Tickets for the afternoon event are $10. For information visit www.storyartscenter.org, or call 910-277-3599.
