After being tied at 14 after a quarter of play, it looked like Scotland would improve their record to 1-1 on the season.
The next quarter, though, was a completely different story.
Pine Forest (2-0) out scored the Scots, 20-4, in the second quarter en route to a 54-39 win over Scotland Thursday night.
“They (Pine Forest) started hitting some shots, we took some bad shots and made some bad decisions,” Scotland Coach Mike Ritchie said on what happened in the second quarter. “They did a great jobon the offensive glass, they hurt us right there.”
Following a first quarter in which the lead changed on six different ocassions, the Trojans went on a 7-0 run to begin the second, forcing the Scots into a time-out with 5:07 to play before halftime. Pine Forest led 34-18 at the half.
“I thought in the first quarter, we were a little rusty, their (Scotland) zone gave us some problems early on,” said Pine Forest Coach David May. “My hat goes off to Mike (Ritchie), they kept playing, they didn’t fold and they’re a very physical team.”
Scotland got the lead down into single digits on more than one ocassion in the third quarter, but still trailed, 44-32, going into the final quarter.
“We didn’t do a good job of blocking out,” Ritchie said. “It’s just a fundamental part of the game along with defense and shot selection. We didn’t do a good job on (Ryan) May. We were trying to slide through the screen instead of going around the top of it and he made us pay.”
Ryan scored 20 of his game-high 24 points in the first game. Curtis McMillan complimented him with 11 points.
“He’s a great player,” Ritchie said of May. “You know he’s good and we’re still searching for an identity and we need some leadership. It goes with youth, we’re playing alot of young guys and the inexperience caught up with us. We have guys that played last year and they’re not playing up to their capability.”
No one on the Scots reached double figures with Lamar McIntyre and Lamont Browne leading the way with eight points apiece. Isaiah Robinson added seven before fouling out while Mo Covingtion had five.
Scotland will be in search of their first win of the season when they host the Buccaneers of Jack Britt this Tuesday.
