The Scotland JV lady Scots trudged through their most sluggish offensive stretch of the season against Purnell Swett Jan. 11 by scoring just six points in the first quarter.

But all it took was a small defensive adjustment and a few words from head coach Linda Crosland for a different team to take the court for the remainder of the game. And when the final buzzer sounded, the JV lady Scots had earned the decisive 60-35 victory over Purnell Swett to bolster their record to a perfect 7-0.

“We weren’t running the floor or playing very good defense in that first quarter,” Crosland said. “So I switched to a man defense and told this team that they can’t run behind the other team in the open court, that they need to sprint ahead of them. And after that, they showed me that they’re ready for the conference schedule to come.”

After finishing the first quarter down 13-6 to the lady Rams Friday night, Scotland would respond by scoring 21 points to close the first half of regulation with a 27-23 lead. And emerging from halftime, the lady Scots remained in firm control by outscoring Purnell Swett by a combined 33-12 in the third and fourth quarters.

Scotland freshman guard Ashlyn Dial continued demonstrating her offensive explosiveness by scoring a game-high 26 points, with 12 of those coming in a 14-point fourth quarter for the lady Scots. Qutina Everette, who has been the team’s leading scorer during the first six games of the 2012-13 season, finished with 10 points as well.

The JV lady Scots next take the court this Friday night at home against Hoke. Game time is currently set for 5 p.m.
