Murphy Brown was tops in trash for the 2012 Fall Litter Sweep.

The group, which was headed by Murphy Brown’s Angie Romaine took the title of first place and “King of the Mountain” by collecting 404 pounds of litter. The employees of Murphy Brown will receive a $200 cash prize. Murphy Brown is livestock production subsidiary of Smithfield Foods, Inc.

In second place was the East Laurinburg Pentecostal Holiness Church team with 230 pounds.

A total of 6 teams participated in this year’s Fall Litter Sweep and collected a total of 895 pounds of litter around Scotland County.

The bi-annual effort is organized by the Laurinburg-Scotland County Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s good to have community members taking pride in the beautification of our county.” Leroy McIntyre, chairman of the chambers’ Green Committee. “This is the time of year where we see a lot of new faces in and around Scotland County with the festivals, parades and events. We want to make sure we are looking our best and we want to continue to encourage our residents to be diligent with their recycling efforts.”

The chamber will offer another chance to help clean up the county and win cash prizes during the Spring Litter Sweep in April 2013.

For information, call the chamber office at 276-7420.
