The Fighting Scots’ cross country team hosted their first home meet of the season Wednesday afternoon, welcoming Hoke County and Lumberton to the five-kilometer course located at St. Andrews University.

After competing last week on a Pinecrest course described by Scotland coach Greg Wrape as “one of the toughest in the state,” the St. Andrews course posed a similar degree of difficulty to their season-opening meet at Lumberton.

And though the final results were mixed, Scotland’s entire 17-runner roster improved their times from the first week of the season.

“Cross country is a self-motivated sport, and to see my team improve their times shows me that they are working to get better every day,” Wrape said. “They push one another and I think that it motivates them to do their very best.”

The Scotland boys’ team dominated their meet against Hoke and Lumberton, finishing the St. Andrews course with the top four fastest times to earn a first-place win overall.

Logan Ward finished first place with a time of 17.49, and was followed by John Holloway (18.19), Kendall Romaine (18.35) and Jared Torgerson (18.47). Teammate Dylan Faulk would finish seventh place overall with a time of 19.41.

The girls would finish third place out of three teams, but that didn’t stop senior Shyanne Pate from giving perhaps the most dominant performance of the entire meet.

Pate would finish first overall with a time of 22.22, more than a minute faster than the second place runner would tally.

The next meet for the Scotland Cross Country team will take place Tuesday September 25th at Hoke County, with a start time of 5:00 p.m.
