Next month, neighboring Moore County will feature the the sounds of blues stylists from Mississippi boogie-woogie to rootsy down-home Texas soul to traditionalists hailing from the foothills of our state.
On July 13 and14, the Sunrise Theater’s will host its premier “funraiser” —the 13th annual Blues Crawl in Aberdeen and Southern Pines.
That Friday night at 8pm, The Rooster’s Wife in Aberdeen will feature Eden Brent, whose piano playing and singing styles are a blend of jazz, blues and soul.
Awarded both “Acoustic Album of the Year” and “Acoustic Artist of the Year” by the Blues Music Awards, Brent has been featured in the PBS documentary, “Boogaloo and Eden”and critics have compared her to Diana Krall, Norah Jones and Sarah Vaughn. Opening for Eden Brent are The Harris Brothers, from the foothills of western North Carolina, bringing their signature showmanship and improvisation to the stage.
On July 14 the music begins in Southern Pines at 1pm and carries on until 1am.
Eleven different venues open their doors to Crawlers including, in a shift this year, the Sunrise Theater itself. Instead of staging a concert performance, the Sunrise will be another “juke joint” with former headliner Seth Walker cranking his guitar-heavy blues classics from 8pm to 11pm. “He’s rich with soul, a tasteful player and a warrior in the field” says Austin blues legend W.C. Clark. Walker’s reputation as a genuine blues man has led to his sharing the stage with the likes of B.B. King, Jimmy Vaughn and Ray Charles.
Downtown businesses hosting blues musicians this year include Swank, Southern Whey, The Bell Tree, Cup of Flow, Eye Candy Gallery, The Jefferson Inn, O’Donnell’s Pub, Rhett’s, Swordfish, and The Wine Cellar.
Discount tickets for Saturday can be purchased before July 7 for $18.
For information, call the Sunrise Theater at 910 692 8501 or stop by the office at 250 NW Broad Street to reserve a wristband.
After July 7 the price increases to $20. For Friday night tickets either buy online at www.roosterswife.org or purchase at the Rooster’s Wife box office on the night of the performances.
