St. Andrews women’s basketball produced their best game of the season Tuesday night as they hosted the Trojans of Mount Olive College. The ladies finished their final home game of the season with a strong effort, entering halftime trailing the Trojans by a mere five points. The Knights fought hard in the second half of the game, but could not work their way past Mount Olive as they finished the game with a 72-51 loss.

Beneé Norton put six shots through the cylinder and drilled both of her free throws, earning a team high total of 14 points. Also active from the field, Rachel Hewitt drained three from behind the arc and also went 100 percent at the line, making all four of her foul shots, en route to 13 total points. Junior Kimayah Fulcher rounded out the SAU double-digit scorers when she put up 10 points; three field goals from down low and four free throw buckets.

SAU put up a strong defense and a solid offense against the Trojans as they went bucket for bucket in the first half and exchanging the lead back and forth for the first 10 minutes of the game. The Knights out shot the Trojans from the line and from behind the arc. The ladies of the Royal Blue and White made 71.4 percent of the free throws that they attempted and shot 40percent from long distance, compared to the Trojans who went 50 percent from the line and only made 21.1 percent of their attempted three pointers.

The Knights snagged 38 total rebounds, 27 defensive and 11 offensive. Brittany Roberts led SAU’s attack on the boards by picking up seven rebounds, followed by Rebecca Bryant and Fulcher who each grabbed six. The squad earned nine team rebounds, with Angeline Domingo-Francois and Norton seizing the remainder of the Knights’ rebounds as they each got their hands on five rebounds.

St. Andrews will conclude the 2011-2012 season this Friday. The ladies will travel to Barton College in Wilson to take on the Lady Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24. Check the SAU Athletics web page for live stats and video of Friday’s game.
