Laurinburg has one of the best chambers in the nation, according to American Chamber of Commerce Executives.

The Laurinburg-Scotland County Chamber of Commerce was awarded the 2011 National Chamber of the Year in Los Angles on Thursday during the annual ACCE Convention.

“We’re extremely proud of the award,” said Chamber President Theresa Lamson. “We feel it validates all the hard work we have done over the past three years. It is also great for our community. Scotland County can use some good news.”

Lamson along with Drew Williamson, the chamber’s immediate past chairman, represented the Laurinburg-Scotland Chamber at the finalist interviews during the 2011 Annual Convention, which began on Wednesday and ends today.

The Chamber of the Year award involves a multi-stage process, which includes an application and interview. New this year, winners of the Chamber of the Year award must wait three years before submitting another application. During all stages chambers will compete amongst peers from similar total income levels. Judges reserve the right to decline to name a winner in any category where none of the applicants meet expectations.

The local chamber was recognized for excellence in operations, member services and community leadership. The

ACCE recognized a total of four chambers based on their budgets. The Laurinburg chamber was in the $450,000 and under — the smallest category.

“This is great,” said Dee Hammond, Chamber chairman. “This chamber has processed and moved forward in the last few years to take on more community development with our business members and community. Thanks to the Board of Directors, staff, members, and volunteers of the chamber. This chamber could not have won such a prestigious award without your help and support.”
