HAMLET — Robbie Taylor of Hamlet will be leading Richmond Community College’s Workforce and Economic Development (WED) division upon the retirement of Steve Smith next month.
Taylor has served as director in the WED division for about three years. He will officially take over duties as WED vice president May 19.
Having worked in both law enforcement and education, Taylor has a long history in public service. He worked for Richmond County Sheriff’s Department for 13 years and was a captain when he left the force to work for RCC. He has also been a part-time instructor for law enforcement classes and training at several community colleges, including RCC.
“I am very excited to lead the WED division and continue the positive relationships that Mr. Smith has fostered over the years with the business sector and the community,” Taylor said. “The key is to increase the marketability of our workforce so companies want to come to Richmond and Scotland counties and hire our people to work for them.”
The WED division of the college offers a variety of short-term, noncredit courses to individuals in the community and to businesses and industries interested in providing training to their workforce. The WED division also provides adult learners with educational opportunities for attaining their high school diploma or GED.
“What we do in this division is improve the lives of people by teaching them job skills to get a job or gain additional skills to advance in the workforce,” Taylor said. “Some people don’t have the luxury of waiting two years to earn a college degree before searching for a job. Our classes aim to provide people with skills and credentials quickly and efficiently so they can get a job – and then maybe they come back and work on a degree.”
Taylor is a graduate of RCC with an associate degree in criminal justice. He earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Mt. Olive University, a master’s degree in public administration from the University of North Carolina-Pembroke and a master’s degree in justice administration from the University of Louisville. He is currently working on a doctorate in business administration from North Carolina Central University.
He and his wife, Donna, live in Hamlet and have a 2-year-old son, Presley.
