LAURINBURG — The teams have been out getting ready, and now the schedules have been made official for the spring sports at Scotland High School.
The varsity softball team and girls soccer officially start the spring sports off on Feb. 26. The Scotland soccer team, led by coach Danny Gallagher, host Whiteville. This will be Gallagher’s first season as head of the girls team, but he coached the boys in the fall. The softball team is on the road at Union Pines on Feb. 26 for a 6 p.m. game.
The softball team, which reached the third round of the state playoffs last season, will play until April 30 before starting the conference tournament. State playoffs begin May 14.
The varsity baseball team also starts their season on the road at the same place where it ended last year — Terry Sanford. The Bulldogs won 3-0 in the second round of the state playoffs. Fans will not have to wait long to see the Scots in Laurinburg, however, as they return for the first home game of the season the next day against Wakefield. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
One game that immediately jumps out on the schedule is a March 26 game against Coral Gables High School out of Florida. That game will be played in Laurinburg. Coral Gables has already started their season, and is 6-0 at this point. The regular season will run through May 1, and the Southeastern Conference tournament will start a few days after that on May 5. The state playoffs begin May 14.
The track and field team will start their season on March 13 with a home meet. They will then travel to Pinecrest and UNC-Pembroke before returning home for an April 3 meet. The conference meet will be held at Pinecrest from April 29-30. Each meet begins at 4 p.m.
The boys golf team will play its first official match on March 10 at Bayonet. They will play their only home match of the season on March 31 at Scotch Meadows. That tees off at 2 p.m. The regular season ends on April 28 against Richmond. The boys tennis team starts their season on March 4 at Purnell Swett before returning home on March 6 to host Pinecrest.
There is always extra interest when Scotland and Richmond face off. In baseball the Scots host the Raiders on April 4, and travel to Rockingham on May 1. The softball team will also host Richmond on April 4, but will not make a return trip. The tennis team will face them in the regular-season finale on April 3. The girls soccer team hosts Richmond on April 2 and travels to the Raiders’ stadium on April 30.
