LAURINBURG — A 24-year-old Laurinburg man is being held in the Scotland County jail after being charged with abusing his 9-week-old child, according to Laurinburg Police.

The infant, according to Assistant Police Chief Cliff Sessoms, is being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit for injuries typically suffered by abused children, including bruising and fractures.

Andrew Michael Oetzel, 24, of 233 East Church St., is being held under a $100,000 bond. He was charged with felonious child abuse after police officers responded to Scotland Memorial Hospital in reference to a call reporting a disturbance around 1 p.m. Thursday.

Sessoms said officers went to the hospital to investigate “accusations of child abuse” and that Oetzel “voluntarily came in for questioning.”

Sessmons said it is unclear who brought the child to the hospital.
