LAURINBURG — A Mount Airy native and recent graduate of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has been named the newest staff writer for The Laurinburg Exchange.

Rachel McAuley will join Mary Katherine Murphy as a staff writer on the newsroom’s two-person staff. She will fill the position previously held by Johnny Woodard, who recently accepted a job with The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette in Hilton Head.

“We are very excited to have Rachel as a part of our team,” said Abbi Overfelt, editor of The Laurinburg Exchange. “We think the enthusiasm she has shown for Laurinburg will be evident in her coverage of this community.”

McAuley has previously worked for Civitas Media as an intern at the Mount Airy News, and at WXII-12 News in Winston Salem. She has also worked as a photographer, reporter and business manager for The Pine Needle, the student newspaper at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and as a photographer for the “Indianhead,” the university’s yearbook.

“I’m excited to be starting my career with The Laurinburg Exchange,” McAuley said. “I’m looking forward to meeting new people, learning more about my profession and growing as a writer.”
