From left, Jennifer McRae, director of Storytelling & Arts Center of the Southeast; Dawn Sullers, of South Scotland Elementary School; Eli McRae; Madora Mullins and Dot Cable, board members of Storytelling & Arts Center of the Southeast; and Leon Gyles, director of the Scotland County Public Library, gathered in Laurinburg Mayor Tommy Parker’s office Thursday as he signed a proclamation declaring October ‘Keep Books Alive’ month.

The library has partnered with the Storytelling & Arts Center, the county’s Parks and Recreation Department and the National Endowment of the Arts for this year’s Big Read, managed by Arts Midwest. Copies of this year’s featured book, ‘Farenheit 451’ by Ray Bradbury, are available for free at the library. As part of the Big Read, the Storytelling and Arts Center will host a free book discussion on Oct. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
