RALEIGH — The St. Andrews University volleyball team dropped their second straight game on Tuesday evening as they fell to Division III team Meredith College in four sets in Raleigh.
SAU started off the match strongly as they came out firing with 14 kills in the first set to win 25-17 before Meredith rallied back to take the second set 25-21.
The third set would be a crucial one as the Knights and Angels combined for more points in one set, 64, than SAU has had all year. The teams battled back and forth with neither side willing to give in.
The Angels would eventually come out on top 33-31 to take the match lead at two sets to one. SAU, however, was able to score 17 kills in the set as well.
The Knights were not able to get over the tough set loss and instead dropped the fourth set 25-13 as Meredith gained more confidence from the big third set that helped them go on to take the match. Karlie Long of Meredith led with 18 kills while Emily Hendricks had 17.
The Knights were led by reigning player of the week, freshman outside hitter Tessa Smith, who had 15 kills and nine digs while senior middle blocker Kendelyn Wheaton chipped in with 12 kills, two blocks and three service aces. Freshman Anne Patterson also contributed with 10 kills and a block.
Sophomore setter Alexis Cordova led in passing with 29 assists.
SAU, now 4-3 will travel to Tennessee to face two conference opponents and a non-conference team over the weekend.
They will first travel to Tennessee Wesleyan (4-6, 1-1) on Friday evening at 6 p.m. to battle the Bulldogs before challenging conference leader Bryan College (8-1, 1-0) at 11 a.m. on Saturday. They will finish their three-game slate in Tennessee with non-conference foe Emmanuel College (Ga.) (8-2) at 1 p.m.
