State DMV officials have revealed that the county’s new license plate agency will likely be located on East Church Street in Laurinburg.
Marge Howell, spokeswoman for the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles said on Thursday that the state “has a contractor who will be locating at 508 East Church Street.”
That property is currently owned by “Missions Ministries,” according to information available via the public Geographic Information System (GIS).
“We are anticipating that the office will be open right around Oct. 15 or thereabouts,” Howell said.
Because a contract has not yet been signed, DMV officials refused to say who would be operating the license plate agency.
“The contract has not been signed. We expect to get it back shortly. (The contractors) and their staff will have to come to attend a class at DMV for three weeks prior to opening the (license plate agency),” Howell said.
The DMV first announced in February that the county’s former plate office, located at 1106-A Aberdeen Road in Laurinburg, would be closing on March 29. As per their policy, DMV then accepted applications for new contractors.
Since the closure of the local license plate agency locals have utilized offices in Rockingham or Raeford for service.
License plate agencies offer vehicle registration services and title transactions, as well as vehicle license plate renewals, replacement tags and duplicate registrations.
There are about 120 license plate agencies in operation across the state.
